More information about 80s series of kids books needed.

In the 80s, when I was a lad, we holidayed in North Wales (probably nothing to do with it) and my parents bought me a paperback book, part of a series of kids books. All featuring bizarre characters, immortalised in sketchy-style colour pictures, like a chair with a face and a bowling ball with a face, which were quite scary. Does anyone know what these books might have been called?
