The person generally credited with creating the first commercial 'automobile' as we know it was Karl Benz, who named said car after his daughter, Mercedes.
Sorry but I have to differ. The first practical motor car has been attributed to Karl Benz but he was not the first to build a motor car. Secondly he did not name it after his daughter, the name Mercedes arose when a french car dealer called Emile Jellinek began selling Daimler cars. He thought the 'Daimler' name sounded too 'teutonic' for french tastes and so had the cars named after his daughter, Mercedes, which is Spanish for 'mercy.'
I suspected, somehow, that I might stand corrected in this. Saxzy, you'd probably be best off taking notice of Blackthorn rather than me.
I'm not sure..............but I think I may have just bought it........:o(
I always understood that Saab made the first commercial car.
