Hi, has anyone read any good fantasy books similar to theGolden Compass by(Philip Pullman) , for my fantasy mad 30 yr old daughter. Thanks in advance

Just a thought, has your daughter read the full 'Dark Materials' trilogy on which the film 'the golden compass' is based? - well worth it if she has not.
Plus, if she has not done it, the full Narnia series by CS Lewis is an excellent read although clearly from a gentler age - although I defy her to read 'The last battle' without tears at the end....

There's a series of books by Joseph Delaney

Book 1. The Spook's Apprentice
Book 2. The Spook's Curse
Book 3. The Spook's Secret
Book 4. The Spook's Battle

They are classed as young adults fiction, but it's suitable for big adults too (well this 30 year old adult enjoyed them).

The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind - nine books that I thought were excellent.

Philip Reeve's "Mortal Engines" (a.k.a. "Hungry Cities") quartet is brilliant. Set in a similar "steampunk" milieu to Pullman's books they follow Nat and Hester's adventures in a world where cities move around on wheels, preying on each other.

Mme LeMarchand and I both prefer them to HDM. The end of the series left me stunned.

A bit "heavier", but even better is George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" sequence. The only problem is how long it takes him to write them!

Agree with Chicadee about Terry Goodkind, excellent series of books. However I much prefer any books by Raymond. E. Fiest especially The Magician.

Another good 'un is China Mieville's 'Un Lun Dun'. It's kind of an urban version of 'The Lion, the Witch..." that sees a young girl finding a way down to Un Lun Dun, the secret city below London.

Not read Terry Goodkind, but would advise people to steer clear of the the TV series based on the books unless they have a cleavage fixation.
