Can anyone confirm how to tell if a book is a first edition or not? I have a feeling that there must be a number quoted on the title pages that includes every number from 1 -10 but not in the correct order - is this right?

No that isn't correct. The quickest way to find out about 1st Edition Books, is to Google "How to recognise 1st Edition Books". This will give you all the information you need.
