Volume 1 by Liang Shih-Chiu, I read this a while ago and thouroughly enjoyed it.
But where is volume 2 and are there other books available by him to read in English?

Look he's an essayist from the third republic of China (Nationalist, Kuo Min Tang, Chang Kai Shek era)
He blended the later vernacular style with the earlier neo-traditionalism which found favour in the second republic (under Yuen Shih Kai).
It's got nothing to do with hanky panky.

Since the talented Mr. Liang is no longer with us, having died in 1987, it's likely that his planned Volume II is going to be delayed... you know, problems with the publisher and all that...

Thanks Schutzenegel, it's much appreciated, I came across this writer after reading "Sky Burial" by Xinran which I enjoyed immensely, Xinran's a good writer and well worth a glimpse, I've read most of what she's published apart from "The Mother's Bridge" which does'nt appeal to me.

Everton. I've checked the Chinese University Press site, and discovered it is linked to Amazon, which is the link which Ankou kindly passed on to you. Your Volume 2 is on there at �18.95 for new, and �16+ for a used copy. It doesn't however give you the additional cost for post and packing which will be extra. This only shows when you click on 'Order', but the delivery time is excellent only 4 days. I have bought through Amazon many times and the service is excellent.

Actually, Volumes 2, 3 and 4 exist, however I can't determine if they've been translated or not. Xie xie, I'll order volume 2 soon, T & S don't knock it until you've tried it his tale entitled "A Cur" I found to be quite amusing in a genteel sort of way.
The book is just one mans view of a rapidly changing world and the lives of people who are trapped within it, the basic silliness of it all, he does'nt talk about politics and what not just day to day life. If you know the Chinese well then you have the added bonus of being able to put facial expressions and intonation into the tales, bringing the whole thing to life.
I'm a fan....

Cantonese for "thankyou" you can put "a" after it if you want to appear very polite.
Pronounced "she she ah".
The reply is "boo ka chee", "you're welcome."

Thanks for your help Schutzenegel, check out Xinran as an author "The Good Women Of China" was her first it's quite good (more in it for women) the first story "The Girl Who kept A Fly As A Pet" was very moving, "China Witness" was her last book and has a much broader base, the bloke who survived The Long March has a very funny tale to tel about getting bombed by the Kuo Min Tang.
