Nick Griffin not allowed to visit Sellafield

BNP leader Nick Griffin has been refused permission to visit the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria on security grounds.

Mr Griffin said he wanted to visit the site, which sits within his North West European Parliament constituency, because he is pro-nuclear power.

But Sellafield Limited, which operates the site, said it was concerned about security and possible demonstrations.

Mr Griffin said the decision prevented him from doing his job as an MEP.

The BNP leader sits on the European Parliament's environment committee and in that capacity asked to visit Sellafield.

But the nuclear plant refused, claiming it could cause "an unnecessary distraction" and be a safety risk.




Should he be allowed in and if so, who should fund the required extra security?

He should be allowed and the EU should pay for any extra security, but I'm surprised they need any, the place is ringed with steel, let him in and shut the bleedin gate, end of.

Why doesn't he go without informing the press, etc.? If no-one knew that he was there then they couldn't protest/demonstrate.

Can one imagine a Labour, Conservative or liberal politician being banned, because they may attract protesters?

If the BNP protesters are the source of the trouble, then it is these trouble making and violent communists that need to be controlled, thus protecting a legitimate politician, to enable him to carry out his lawful duties.

Isn't Sellafield Ltd a private company?

Does anyone have the 'right' to go there? It's at their discretion surely? What if wanted to come to the premises of my business for 'fact finding'? Would I be expected to welcome him in?

It's not as if he's being banned from Trafalgar Square or his local fire station.

I say 'let him visit'. He should be shown aroung the nuclear reprosessing facility...without any protective clothing.

And as a souvenir, he could be given a bag of radium..,and be told that they're 'Sella-sweets'.
