Politically Correct in 1923(when I was born) meant voting the same as your neighbours! LOL

:c)
I not so much that there wasn't PC then I imagine that there were still offensive words in 1923 but I guess sambo wasn't one of them.
I don't know when it started to be offensive but it obviouly was by the time "Love thy neighbour" came out.
ni66er was perjorative in the US in the 1800s but was still being used in the UK without offensive intent up to 50 years ago.
I loved reading Kipling's stories to my daughter when she was younger but I had to edit them on the fly from time to time!

Sadly I don't remember the name of it, but my favourite book was about two (or possibly more) children whose Uncle used to call on them regularly and take them out for nature rambles, teaching them to observe the countryside, and telling them lots of interesting facts - it was a marvellous introduction into the intriguing world of natural history.

Forgot to say that my own favourite book was 'The Wind in the Willows' because I loved the bit where they were in the wild wood in the snow and then in the comfort of Badger's house. Liked happy endings I guess, as the other lovely bit was in Mole's house when Ratty takes charge and the detour ends happily for Mole.I still have -and read - my original copy given to me in 1939 when I was 2! No pictures of course. I doubt modern children would bother with it looking dull like that! I had it read to me at that age, but was devouring it myself at 5.
