Looking for a Book series from the 80's

It was set in the USA in the future after a nuclear war (I think). It was back to a time of knights, and kings lots of battles. Some of the characters were immortal, could only die by drowning if I remember correctly. 1 of the main characters name was Billy the axe, he was a duke
