Time travel

I enjoy speculative thinking, and relish the thought of time travel. I am aware of the paradoxical nature of the subject, but my fascination is irrepressible.
Can anyone suggest a good time travel novel? I would be grateful for any suggestions.

In these fantasies, I imagine going back to that time but entering my own physical being as it was back then, including same lifestyle, environment etc. It's hilarious, I set it up like this: I wake up the following day in bed, just as it was for me back then - fully aware of what has happened, though probably having to feign some sort of laspse of memory in order to pick back up on what I was supposed to be doing work/school wise. Another thing I have thrown into the equation is this: I'm allowed to bring ONE complete object from 2010 with me back to that time. LOL imagine going back to say 1985 equipped with a fully loaded up laptop, full of music/films from this time, I wonder what would happen if you casually got it out in a pub and started doing a bit of typing.
I can almost hear those chairs creaking, the hushed tones and looking up to find myself surrounded by squinting mystified lager drinkers.

Thank you all for the replies.
The house on the Strand by Daphne Du Maurier seems a little romantic for my taste,
And I am not familiar with Barbara Erskine but I will have a look, thanks Polly 1958. a good year as I recall.
Whickerman, Time Traveller's Wife I have seen as a film. I found it frustrating, and as you say too romantic, but I thank you.
Daft granddad, I like the name. I read the time machine back in 1958 I said it was a good year. It is too dated now, and the film was a disappointment. But thank you for the suggestion.
Answerprancer. You get the idea. I too have indulged in similar flights of fancy also involving a laptop computer, sadly I also purchased the entire series of Goodnight Sweetheart, it’s a corny British comedy about time travel. As I could not find a book good enough I tried to write a story about the subject. It was quite good but only 10 pages long, Oh well.

There's a classic time travel short story by the science fiction writer Robert A Heinlein called "By His Bootstraps". It was written in 1941, and so the style can seem a little dated. Nevertheless, the twists and turns of the plot make it an acclaimed work, then and since. Many folk think it's never been bettered. And...it's available to read online here...
