Obviously not?
No answers? Shame! Not a novel, but Kipling's 'Just So Stories' were my constant companion in my early youth. Since then, I must have read his 'Kim' over 30 times. I can still read it to the last word, and immediately return to the start and begin reading it all over again.
As a kid, Jim Davis by John Masefield was a firm favourite. A real 'boy's own' type adventure story about smugglers in the 1800's.
Probably wouldn't appeal to today's youth but as an eight year old in the 70's, I loved it.
Like heathfield, I've always been partial to "Kim", but my real childhood favorite was Stevensons "Treasure Island". Great books never go out of fashion which is why so many of these books, despite being written years ago, have never been out of print. I've often wander if people will still be reading books like "Harry Potter" in 100 years time
When I was very young (!) I used to read and re-read Noddy Meets Father Christmas by Enid Blyton. I was obviously an Enid Blyton fan as when I was slightly older the books I would read a lot were The Rings O' Bells Mystery and The Valley of Adventure, both by Enid Blyton.
i bought a copy of Three Men in a Boat when I was 12 and still pick it up and read it from time to time. That and my copy of the Annotated Snake are the only two books I'd rescue if the place caught fire :-)
'oor wullie' 'the broons book'
