I'm trying to remember the name of a book I read a couple of years ago, and I think that it was the authors only book. She had a really strange name, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was! (the author was American I think.)
The story starts when the person in the book is a little girl, and something happens to her brother, but it isn't clear what. Somewhere near the end a sort of derelict water tower featuresand I think that someone drowns in it. the book was fairly long, and very good.
Does this sound familiar to anyone, as it's driving me mad!

Many thanks

this sounds like To Kill a Mocking Bird
by Harper Lee.
It is the only book she wrote.
There's no derelict water tower in TKAMB
what about No time for goodbye by Linwood Barclay? the author isnt female but the story is about a young girl who wakes up one morning andher whole family have disappeared - her mother father and brother. From what I remember there is a lake and something to do with water in it near the end. The other one I thought of was Mill On the Floss by George Elliot...
