As an adult what was the first adult book you read. In my case I was 14. It was 1963 and I read Nevil Shute's The Chequer Board. I became a great fan of his and have read all his books. Some great some not so good. So over to you. What was your first adult read?

Jane Eyre was my first adult book, and I think I was about 12 when I first read it. I am an avid reader....
Probably Shakespeare, I was quite keen on it as a child.

BTW - did you see this from me yesterday? http://www.theanswerb...k/Question971390.html
I read The Omen, and Assault on Precinct 13 when I was about 11.

strange child, I was!
For me-Little Women and also Jane Eyre-when I too was 12-ish, followed by To Kill a Mocking Bird.
Probably "Z for Zachariah". I think I was about 14 as well. I did read The Hobbit and LOTR but I thought they were kids books at the time.
I'm a voracious reader.
But I have no idea what was, or when I read, my first grown-up book.
............... er................... Lady Chatterley's Lover ................ when I was ten

Rebecca by Daphine Du Maurier at about age 13
It was To Kill a Mockingbird - probably the same as many who went to school the same years I did.
It remains my favourite to this day.

First adult book?
I can't recall exactly which title it was, but I was working my way through all of Sherlock Holmes around the age of 9 or 10.
No worries Mic ........... I didn't understand a word of it ..................

Still don't ;o)
I have always read non fiction, I prefer manuals and information books to stories, though I read a lot of stories as a child, I soon got a thirst for encyclopedia's, manuals and statistics.

I have also found that if you have read a good book, don't go to see the film.
I read wilbur smiths "a falcoln flies"which is most definately an adult book(some very tastefully and realistic sexual scenes amongst the pages). I got a telling off big time from my teacher as I was ELEVEN . His books are so well written i've been a fan ever since

As a young child we could take a book to school on library afternoon. I took a Secret Seven book. My parents were sent a letter saying Enid Blyton was not allowed in school as she was a communist !!!
Jane Eyre here too, and Little Women, then when I was about 13 I started reading Alistair McLean for some reason, read lots of his, then Winston Graham's Poldark books,
