It was during the Tokugawa period (or Edo period, named after the capital)

After it was closed off I understand that 'spies' were sent all around the world to gather information/technology to bring the country up to date.  Perhaps this is why Japan is one of the leading countries in building/designing electronics etc.?

Japan was closed off after Tokugawa Iyasu defeated rivals at the battle of Sekigahara to take the Shogunate. He closed off Japan to all Europeans apart from an enclave at Nagasaki for trading. Japan remained closed off until the mid-nineteeenth centruy when the Americans 'encouraged' them to reopen their borders.
