Blending acrylics

How do you get sharp colour acrylics to blend into a continuum from light of a colour to dark of that colour over a black background? It's killing me. Do you use a wash? Or do you just keep mixing in more black? Or white?

I guess you paint, as I do. Never tried a black canvas though.
My suggestion would be to start off with solid colour and, as the wash progresses, add water in increments until almost clear. If you need to go to the tint (light side) of the colour as well, start your solid colour halfway down the length of the graded area, so that you work from half-way to one extreme. Then turn the canvas over and, starting with solid colour again, add white in increments until you have completely lightened by the time you reach the other extremity of your canvas.
