Book Club

I'm thinking of setting up a book club for a group of people in the area. I live in a rural setting so people 'know' each other. I'd like other people's experiences of this kind of thing such as how often to get together, making sure people read the books and don't just come for a chat with other members (which of course we can do once we've chatted about the book). Ideally, should this be at one person's house or take it in turns...? How many people etc?

I ran a Book Group for my local U3A and still go to one. We all choose a book throughout the year so we read a wide variety of novels and non fiction. Some local libraries have their own groups and will let you borrow multiple copies of books rather then having to buy them.
You will like some books and hate others, but you will read some that you would never have bought and really like.
This month we are reading The Surgeon of Crowthorne, about a man in Broadmoor who helped create the Oxford English Dictionary. I thought I would hate it, but it turned to out to be very good!

6-12 seems to be a good number. Each member nominates a couple of books. Our library is brilliant at sourcing them for us. Saves a fortune. Our library also provides a meeting room (free) and tea, coffee, chocolate or water facilities. When living abroad belonged to a group which met monthly in each others' homes. Provided refreshments, nothing elaborate. Bought or borrowed our own books. Still got some.
