POEM :: THE PROMISE
What do angels and heaven mean
to children who've just been told
they no longer have solid rock
beneath their feet but the shifting sands
of the Sahara desert as they discover
parents do not live forever?
That the very core of their existence
is fading into the cruel distance
of scattered memories, the crumbs
of a smile, a summer dress she wore,
the smell of perfume on an August afternoon.
Like a dream that's ended far too soon,
they wake to the threat of institutional sorrow,
where they are forced to borrow nightmares
that were never meant to be theirs.
Unless a promise made in the face of grief,
walls knocked through, a tent erected
in a garden, fragile foundations
that reach deeper than blood,
that would not hesitate to consider
the option of adoption. For what greater gift
than to lift a child from the paradox of state care,
to dare to open your door to the restoration of the future.
.
Gosh, that's moving.
