He was buying it for someone else.........a foreigner.
It was in Braille and he was using it for a blind person.
A foreign language book.
He was buying a book in a foreign country.
A computer manual in a computer language he didn't know.
It was written in braille
He couldn't understand A (as in one) word in which ...etc
He was buying a book in Braille?
Sorry I type slowly
It was for a foreign friend

He was buying a koran in arabic for the local courts

He liked the pictures

he'd taken the pictures

He was foreign but he fancied the girl behind the counter

It was the yiddish policemans union and Ed recommended it!
All valid answers though I like the idea of not understanding just one word.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Motley, I already gave that answer which was not the right one, but thanks for your input.

Fibonacci, Absolutely correct - excellent. Only three people have come up with the right answer when I rang in just now! THANK YOU.
Is this the entire puzzle? There are obviously multiple answers.
Actually the one word in it that the man couldn't understand well he couldn't even find it to be honest was Cilit Bang! oris

Dave - No, not multiple answers, just the one above given by Fibonacci. I agree with you that there should be others, but that's the rules of the radio station!
I'm going to be really pedantic here (and probably make myself look a total wally to boot), but the book was actually written in his native language. It was merely translated and PRINTED into the foreign language.

I'll get me coat.
So the copy of the book that he bought was PRINTED and not written. Therefore the question was worded wrongly.

I'll get me coat too!
the book was a dictionary
