Book ideas

Think I might buy a kindle and am looking for book ideas. I haven't read a book for ages so can't remember the name of any authors that I particularly like. The sort of books I like are man meets woman (or vice versa)/ group of friends/neighbours nothing much happens but neither does anything bad (might be called Aga sagas?). I don't like anything too long or set in the past (haven't got the concentration span for anything that requires too much thought). Thanks for any ideas (ps - haven't put this in the book section as I suspect the posters there read very different types of books to me).

Right, found some - Mike Gayle, Sophie Kinsella, books similar to the ones written by these authors (would normally go to the library and do some research but time is not on my side at the moment).

The Village series by Miss Read; the Agatha Raisin series by M C Beaton; The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McColl; anything by Cecilia Aherne, Wendy Holden, Marian Keys

If you don't read much why bother with a Kindle? Just borrow books from your local library. Much cheaper.

Try Katie Fforde I think she's just what you might be looking for. In all her books a woman leaves something/somewhere for some reason, goes and settles/works somewhere else. In the course of her new life meets new friends and eventually fits in nicely, meeting a man along the way who is not immediately `right' but who turns out to be Mr Right in the end after various ups and downs etc etc. They are light hearted, entertaining and no effort to read.

Try Maeve Binchy, she's an easy read, and not too bad either.

Instead of a kindle-look into a kobo or sony. Then you can borrow from your library if it loans out ebooks.

Hi HC - I used to read loads but I have five children under 12. The youngest two are off to school in September and I also want to read on holiday (already have a shed load of luggage without taking actual books too). I am hoping to broaden my reading material when I have a bit more time.

No 1 Ladies detective agency series is fantastic. Very gentle and well mannered with humour and some excitement (kinda like Jane Austen in Africa!) Did you know there are dozens of free books on Kindle? Just choose a few and delete them if not suitable. Usually once you have found a genre you like the system with recommend any similar. I bought a Kindle in March, having decried the whole ides. I love it! No dragging books around or losing pages. Enjoy!

Thanks for all the ideas, I have read Katie Fforde books but had forgotten the name.

I have an iPad but I am not risking taking it away with me (won't ever have any charge in it anyway as the little people will use it).

If you like the classics-like Jane Austen-you can get them free from gutenberg

I like all those authors but if you want a smallish book then M.C. Beaton is very good, especially the Agatha Raisin series and Hamish MacBeth series. Maeve Binchy's books are good but they are thicker so would take longer to read. I was fascinated by 'The Glass Lake' and read all through the night. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series is very good too.

I love Lesley Pearce her books sound like real life. The first one I read of hers was called Charity. Haven't looked back since.

Who wrote the book called Pip, about a young woman who was a children's entertainer? There is a series about her and her sisters.
