I was woken one night by a terrific crash, which I thought must be someone smashing the glass in the kitchen door. I had 3 little boys to protect, so I made my way round the house searching. I left the kitchen to last, in case of getting on the wrong side of an intruder. In the near-dark could see the glass was unbroken, but a big white thing was lying on the floor. I dared to turn the light on, and found that the white thing was the diffuser from the kitchen neon light.
But the most extraordinary thing which had happened was that, as it fell, this long lump of plastic had turned tha gas on on the cooker. If I had left the problem much longer, I could have had an explosion when the heating came on. It took half an hour of airing the kitchen with the windows open before I could go back to bed.
