It's a floaty chiffony type of thingy a bit like a very fancy sexy dressing gown, usually see through.

a bath, a peignoir and clean sheets sets a woman up for life. quote from book; sounds like my style if I knew wot it is
after having a bath, slip on the peignoir and lounge seductively on the chaise longue in one's boudoir whilst sipping champagne.

Wot ya reading? x
It was originally a kind of fancy hairdresser's gown - in the days when rich women had men in to do their hair, powder it, add the flowers, frogs, diamonds or whatever was a la mode - the gown covered their expensive dresses so they didn't get nits and gunk on them.
peigne - comb

Then gradually it became the rage to have fancier peignoirs and to lounge filmily as described by Alba.

I only read on hols; get a cheapo trip alba, theyre desperate for tourists out here
Mosaic beat me to it, but to pedantically expand on the meaning of the word:
"French: literally, comber, i.e., something worn while one's hair is being combed, equivalent to peign ( er ) to comb (< Late Latin pectināre; see pecten) + -oir"

At least I'm ahead of Quizmonster...
Yes, literally, it's for wearing when combing your hair (or having it combed), but translates now as 'dressing gown', which, after all, is what a woman would wear when doing her hair in the morning.

French is good for literal descriptions like this. A boudoir is 'a room for sulking in ' (from bouder 'to sulk'). Ah, those French women !
A flimsy type of dressing gown.
