Many artists regard self-portraiture as one of the greatest challenges. Perhaps RvR just wanted to explore such challenges?

Anyway, I also spend a lot of time in front of the mirror. It's not vanity; it's just seeking not to scare animals and children too much!

You have to remember there was no TV or Internet in those days. Gazing into the mirror for hours on end would be the highlight of your day.
