I'm a huge jane austen fan and would like to know if the character (Catherine Moreland) was based on herself? There are subtle similarities.

people are still arguing over what sort of person Jane Austen was - was she polite, was she sarcastic, was she gentle, was she ruthless? Without knowing that, it's hard to say whether a character has a similar personality

I've been reading Claire Tomalin's book on Jane Austen; in it she lays down vague interpretation on how Miss Austen used her novels to portray her own, as well as her sister Cassandra's character...as well as those she knew besides, including a one Tom Lefroy.
