The "most famous artist" is subjective and must depend on where you live and your influences. This does not equate to the "best artist" at all! Because this Answerbank category does not include Music we can exclude the musician John Lennon, but not the actress Helen Mirren. Imho. I will go for Rembrandt for his amazing surpassing handling of light, Renoir, the French impressionist painter, for his perfect and natural depiction of subjects and landscapes, Van Gogh for his wonderful use of line & colour to express his emotions, Picasso for his different styles and of course Leonardo da vinci for his unbelievable life like yet surreal style.
I hink it is fair to ask who the most famous artist is.
It's not the same as the best or your personal favorite and actually it's not a subjective question at all.
However you would have to ask a wide selection of people from all over the world to name artsts they have heard of and collate the first ones people think of.
I've not actually come across anyone actually doing it though

methyl has a good point... deffinition of 'famous'... if it's the most widely known, here in the U.S. it would likely be Charles M. Schulz . What? Never heard of him? He's the artist that originated the "Peanuts" (a/k/a/ Charlie Brown) cartoon series... one site testifies: "... beginning on October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000 (the day after Schulz's death). In total 17,897 different Peanuts strips were published. The strip was one of the most popular and influential in the history of the medium, and considered the most beloved comic strips of all time.
