Childrens book title/ Author?

I am looking for the title/author of a book I read when I was young, its about a boy who has mumps, and one day when he's really sick, he catches his toys talking.He has a battered teddy bear and a toy soldier. They all go on an adventure at one point they're on a boat, and another they're eating venison cooked to rags in red wine...funny what you remember...I can't remember the title for the life of me! I realise this is very sketchy information to go on, but i have been desparately trying to remember this for some time as I would love to read it again.
