These people live in a remote area. //Singing, looking out of the window, and talking to a man who is not a relative is considered immodest behaviour, marrying a man of her own choosing is an insult to the family//. How can we drag all these people who behave little better than animals, into the modern world, considering that there are boatloads of them coming here as we speak, all expecting to continue their lives with archaic beliefs. What a mess the world is in.

They're brainwashed and ignorant. You can do anything if you're brainwashed and ignorant enough.
And by the way, if you think you're better than them don't be so arrogant. Your brainwashed and ignorant ancestors were doing the same thing hundreds of years before you were born, so who are you to comment about it?

Ludwig...of course we did stupid and cruel things here in Britain centuries ago, but we don't now. Pakistan is a country who would rather spend eye-watering amounts of money building nuclear weapons, rather than educating its own people...this is the 21st century, not the middle ages. If backward states like Pakistan want to be taken seriously on the world stage, it should start acting in a civilised fashion, and that starts with education.

I agree, but the trouble is Muslims don't seem to bat an eye lid at this type of killing and as Pakistan is largely Islamic I don't think they will move on at any great speed!

I think Ludwig is just trying to say that it's a phase that every civilisation goes through in its journey to evolve. We did, but it was some time ago, they are now making that transition, slowly, but it is happening. this is not to say that I think it is right or acceptable, because I don't, but I do understand why they are where they are now, and not a sparkly everyone's equal and entitled to do what they like western culture, because we ourselves were not that only a short time ago.
Thanks for looking after my thread mikey, I've had a loo seat emergency!
I suppose the only answer is education but if things are getting better it doesn't seem like it to me. Week after week, we read of a new horror occurring because of a perceived slight to someone's honour. We read of some appalling cases of child cruelty that take place here and unfortunately that will always happen, but in the main isn't it a universal given that parents love their children more than they love themselves and would give their own life if they could save that of their child? Was this girl, and others who have suffered the same fate, not loved by her family that they could hold her down and slit her throat? There is no honour in that.

No problem ladyB...any time you want me to babysit, just ask !
We must be careful with stories that now appear with monotonous regularity about Islam and its weird ways. I suspect that in uneducated parts of the Muslim world, like Pakistan, so-called honour killings have been going on for as long as Islam has....100's of years. Perhaps its being reported more often these days, as the Muslims now appear to have taken the place of the Jews as racist targets. Not that I am defending this dreadful event in any shape or form. It is completely unacceptable.
The only answer must be education. Pakistan and places like it have only had democracy for a very short time, unlike us in Western Europe. In the case of Pakistan, vast areas of the country are little different from medieval times, albeit with more mod cons. The country should be encouraged to move with the times, but as religion is at the heart of the affair, don't expect much progress very soon. After all, they are still lobbing the occasional bomb at each other much closer to home, over basic religious differences, although the Anglo-Irish Agreement has put paid to most of it, thank God. I visited Belfast as a young boy in the late 60's and I was terrified at the violent menace that existed over there, having to run for cover on one awful and frightening occasion.
