At the time when "Lasher" (Anne Rice) came out, I was ENTHRALLED and wished the story would never end.

The American Boy by Andrew Taylor. Can't say it was inspirational but it was very enjoyable and well written. A historical "whodunnit?" (the American Boy in question is Edgar Allen Poe) and reminiscent of Wilkie Collins.

Let's see...

Fight Club by Chuck Palaniuk, and just about anything written by him, if you want to be uncomfortable, as he tells the truth about things. The stories are intense and fast paced.

If your a religious person, i suggest Frank E. Peretti's This Present Darkness, and Piercing the Darkness

The Abhorsen Trilogy Garth Nix, is also a fantastic fantasy trilogy.

If you would like to read about human cruelty i also suggest Robert Cormier's The Chocolate War, and Beyond the Chocolate War.
