Right can't remember much about this (however I remember I loved the story/book)

Set in the 1940's (I think)

Two central chararcters, the male was called John Dunn (I think) and the female a can't remember but John's pet name for her was Lorna, after 'Lorna Doone' and she loves horses.

He is a local working class lad and she is the daughter of a rich family.

They meet in a 'Folly' (can't remember it's name) and have a teenage romance then the story follows their separate lives over the years.  He goes in the army.

At the end they 'find' each other again she is dying and he looks after her to the end *sob*

I thought the 'young female' part was played by Patsy Kensit, but after searching the web it appears not :-(

Can anyone shine ANY light on this ..... it's SO bugging me!!!!!
