many paintings are painted on oil on canvas- is this the same canvas as used on training shoes?- who discovered its suitability for painting?

Using cloth as a surface for painting dates to at least 5,000 BC.  Linen and woven cotton were used in Egypt at that time.  Canvas, as used in today's art became poular during the Renaissance ca. 1490.  A woven cotton, canvas is similar to that used for other purposes, including tents and, yes, training shoes.  The fabric of choice by professional artist, however is finely woven linen...
