what are his other interests?
teenagers are a bit faddy and have different likes and hobbies, i think it would be safest to buy him a book token, you can't go wrong this way

According to most research, boys (I am talking 'boys' here though) prefer non-fiction to fiction. Maybe a biography of a footballer (if he likes football) or another inspirational hero? (My boyfriend - although def. not 19 anymore - seems to enjoy these.)

But it really does depend on him. Why don't you try to find a bloke in the bookshop and ask for a recommendation giving some of his interests? You could always give him a book to get him started and include a book token for his choice too...

Razzle?

How about a book token?

If he does like football get him Brian Cloughs biography my boyf aint into reading but he really enjoyed this. He also enjoyed a book called Gangs by Tony Thompson, he interviews people who are involed in organised crime and tells you how its all done Very interesting, if he likes that sort of thing
Agree with the others that it does depend on what his other interests are. However, I think most young men seem to like Chuck Palahniuk, who wrote Fight Club, or maybe Hubert Selby Jr. The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart might be a good one too.

The Folded Leaf by William Maxwell

or if you can't finf that, then 'So long, see you tomorrow' also by William Maxwell.
