In "The Pilgrams Landing and First Winter", why did several men volunteer to explore the land, instead of using the shallop?

Nice one, Woof.
Before setting sail for the New World the shallop had been dismantled and stored on the waist deck. It sustained severe damage during the crossing and on arrival at Providence required both re-assembly and extensive repairs before it could be pressed into service.
The "Mayflower" was anchored in shallow water, so the men waded ashore and commenced local exploration on foot whilst the carpenters re-assembled and repaired
the shallop.
and here are the Mayflowers

....... and here is a shallop ...............

oh lumme I was thinking of one of these

....... well I'm domed, you certainly know your onions ....
