Freeing Stuck Jaws Of Electric Drill

I have an old Wolf electric hammer drill, the jaws of which are `stuck` wide open after I removed a large drill bit. A friend suggested tapping lightly around the chuck with a hammer, however this has failed to free the jaws. Any other suggestions as to how to free the jaws would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Thanks jno, but sprayed WD40 into chuck before I set too with the hammer.

can you place the chuck key in a vice, put the drill onto it and gently turn the actual drill or use vice/mole grips on the key

Have a look at the space between the chuck and the drill head, is the spindle round, or has it got a notch that would allow you to insert a flat spanner ?
If it will allow you to insert a flat spanner, hold the spindle with the flat spanner and use a pair of mole grips on the chuck to try and free the jaws.

Get 2 pair of gas pliers or 2 small stillson wrenches. Determine which way the jaws of the chuck rotate in relation to the main body and apply opposite turning pressure to each pliers/wrench
