It's because our songs are usually anodyne and unforgettable!
It's probably true that people think we don't take it as seriously as we should, especially when Britain has such a great musical tradition.
But I very much doubt it that would be a factor if there was actually a strong entry: "wow, I really liked that, but hang on, Brexit!, maybe not"

Last year Russia won the popular vote, and that country isn't exactly the personification of the European dream. And those perennial Europeans Australia came second overall (!!!)
