Second Hand Car Sale And The Law???

I bought a car tonight off Gumtree, it was listed as a private seller, but it was actually a trade seller when I got there. I thought the car looked ok, had a little test drive, all seemed ok. Driving it home I noticed smoke coming from the exhaust, I took it to a relative who is a mechanic, who told me it was burning oil and could be a major engine problem, I rang the dealer straight away and he told me to bring the car back so he can have a look at it. I am now very uneasy about the car, he never offered me a refund, just to repair the car. I have left the car with him.

Does anyone know what my actual rights are?

The first rule of buying a car from a private seller, is when first contacting them, tell them that you are interested in the car they are selling, asking for more details. If they are selling more than one car, they will have to ask you which car it is you are interested in.
