Communists monitored by MI5 over fears they could destroy democracy are now senior advisers to Corbyn, claims the spy agency's former chief

Dame Stella Rimmington refused to name names but said they were 'familiar'
Comments have triggered mass speculation as to who she was referring to
Among possible candidates are Seamus Milne, Andrew Murray & Jon Lansman
Former MI5 director-general made the claims at Cheltenham Literature Festival

Allegations but it could be very worrying. Are labour supporters worried?

Wonder who Theresa Mays senior advisers were?.
Yes. I've met Seamus Milne and had a fairly long conversation with him (some years ago, before he got famous). He's an idiot, though I'd be very surprised if he had truly malocious intentions.

The other two names I'm not familiar with. I hope they are expelled if they harbour Stalinist/anti-democratic goals.
I’m pretty sure Corbyn has a file of his own. If any labour supporters find these ‘allegations’ surprising, they must be even more blinkered than I thought.
Looks like Hurricane Ophelia has just made land in YMB's teacup.
So MI5 was wrong, democracy (as it exists) hasn't been overthrown, and the monitoring is a reason to prevent them being advisers ?

Advisers advise, those they advise reach their own conclusions.
MI5 were wrong about what OG?
democracy (as it exists) hasn't been overthrown
Og, are you saying that surveillance is only successful when those being watched are able to carry out whatever it is they were being watched for?
It doesn’t say anywhere that MI5 are concerned that democracy is being overthrown. Someone is, but I suspect it’s the Govt who’ve asked 5 to investigate.
Didn't something similar happen with the Clinton v Trump election in the USA , when trump did the same thing and gor the FBI to dig up as much dirt as possible against Hilary Clinton because he also was running scared .
It's really not worth pretending this problem doesn't exist Gulliver - it clearly is one that Labour leaders /members have to find some sort of solution to.
Kromo, you know as much as I do , this is called Mud throwing, by the Cons , because they are running scared , very, very scared . The present ruling Govt have got the jitters big time, they know they are the future opposition party.
they monitored Harold Wilson, didn't they - while others were monitoring them. I'm never too bothered with what spies get up to.

Interesting to see some labour supporters dont believe there are any commies and its all made up by the Tories.

I must admit I didnt realise MI5 was run by the Tories, learn something every day I suppose.
MI5 spying on the Labour Party ?

Who would have thought it possible ?

You didnt read the article did you?
old one

Jack Straw asked to see his file when he was Home Secretary
and I think sir Humphrey even tried - "I dont think you are supposed to sir."

1964 - Harold Wilson was particularly worried about being monitored and also of cabinet coups - but the system was heavily criticised / satirised at the time on the lines of:
"Someone is seen carrying a rag called "The Red Flag" in London and the security services say - 'this is bad infiltration we must find out where he bought it from.' "

Lenin by the way who was chased by the Cheka - was very happy to use the same people to oppress HIS enemies, led or topped by Feodor Dzerinsky I think

// they monitored Harold Wilson, didn't they - while others were monitoring them.//

comes out in Peter Wrights Spy Catcher

he didnt by the way - catch many spies

Spy catcher in Oz is worth a mench because Downing St intentionally perjured itself in court in Oz ( I mean blimey did the kangaroos notice for chrissakes?) and the AG threatened to raid Downing St during the case.

He didnt last - the attorney general - the actors father - Sir Michael Havers. He was unrepentant and said he would do the same thing again as an honest man - so the only real question is: how did this man of principle rise so far ?
