Getting home early to a welcome glass of red from a John Cooper Clarke evening......I left part way through his performance....

I have only ever walked out on a performance twice before and then only at the interval.....tonight was so dire I disturbed half a row of people to leave......why Dave didn't book aisle seats I don't know....what with his long legs....

I know of JCC but had never seen him perform........he waffled....stumbled....forgot his words.....couldn't read his notes....and spoke so quickly I couldn't understand a word.....lord was I bored....

Noting when the audience roared with laughter when he took a breath and a drink after he'd said nothing in particular I decided it was a case of The Emperor's New Clothes......and told my companion.....a huge JCC fan that I had go......I'd wait in the foyer.....he came with me.....

If you have tickets.....offload them!....Gx

It was shockingly poor - a pathetic travesty of the man I've seen at various points in his career.

I saw him in his pomp in Manchester/Stockport in the 80s - he was brilliant. Even as a drug-addled wreck in the 90s he was capable of putting on a great show - but tonight was just embarassing.

Stumbling, mumbling, slurring and repeating himself - how anyone (even a committed fan) could find it anything other than just toe-curling is beyond me.
It seems to me, it's the only product where you don't get a refund when it's faulty.
Just thought of another one, Newcastle United.
Thought I reconised that name, punk poet wasn't he.
Did he manage 'Evidently Chickentown' ? I suppose he must have been able to remember all those F words, at least!
What a shame..x

Indeed, Sam.....though the theatre manager and I are communicating about his poor sound system so I'll suggest he puts my potential refund towards the new one I want.... ;-)

Yes, Tony......so I'm told......and he did remember the F word, GG....about the only one he did remember.......didn't hang about for Chickentown.......well unless it was one of the mumbled ones I missed......x

Hi, Patsy......when you're sitting there thinking........I could have popped to Aldi for some more wool.....or.....I could have stayed at home and cleaned the kitchen floor it is a shame..... :-(
Evening gness and SD,

He seems to have got progressively worse in his performances over the years....never ever seen him live, only on shows like 8 out of 10 cats, Would I lie to you and Countdown/ Cats.....seems a bit more subdued and quirky there, but it is edited, so obviously when facing a live Aussie can't hack it anymore. What a shame, as great in his heyday.
Have a glass of wine and chill... sheer bliss ☺

Me and Mrs B?....Have our hot chocolate and hit the hammock...up early tomorrow before daylight. Night guys and sleep well x

Hi, Yogi....I'm told he was good once......but it's not worth fussing over..... I have a bacon butty and a glass of wine so I'm happy....

Sleep well...xxx
Last time I was that disappointed was Chuck Berry at Newcastle City Hall, circa 1972. He invited a dancing girl on stage after two or three songs. About a dozen members of the audience followed her, Berry left the stage and never came back. Did we get a refund, did we heck.
Question Author
That's poor, Sam.......if he's still alive Minty'll sort him for you.....x
He went to that great concert hall in the sky March this year.
I seem to remember that Berry always required payment in cash before the show and would never exceed the precise contracted performance duration (usually around 30 minutes) even if it meant stopping halfway through a song.

One plus point tonight - the support act (Luke Wright) was very good indeed for his 30 minutes - I'd go to see him again.
Question Author
Thinking of what Sam said about a refund......I agree with Dave.....Luke Wright was worth the price of the tickets..and he's a dish!....x
Gness and Sunny-Dave, if you have any interest in wildlife you may want to catch Saba Douglas-Hamilton. Saw here in Manchester, two very entertaining hours.
My Dad was a massive fan of John Cooper Clarke so I'm sorry to hear this, and I always loved the use of Evidently Chicken Town at the end of The Sopranos. Fabulous (if you're a Sopranos fan).
