I have to do a book comparison for my english, I'm supposed to be comparing curious incident of the dog.... with any other book of A-level standard. Apparently comparing two characters isnt an option and it has to be thematic, but the only themes i can think of our autism, father-son relations, murder mystery etc. and i was looking for a rather less obvious book to compare it to, something other than catcher in the rye, any ideas? Please?

The Lovely Bones? It's by Alice Sebold and about a girl who is murdered by a man in her neighbourhood and she watches her family from heaven. You'd need to read it to see if it's suitable but I've heard a few people talking about doing it for their Highers (Scottish equivalent)
a prayer for owen meany

what about from the angle of an unusual narrator -

making you see the world from a totally different perspective

your essay could focus on the writer's skill in making you identify with the narrator's alternative perspective on life...

how about:

a teenage killer - "VERNON GOD LITTLE"

an actual dog - "THE LAST FAMILY IN ENGLAND"

an alien - "UNDER THE SKIN"

I'm an English teacher and these are all sufficiently 'analyse - able'

and they alll form interesting narrative contrasts with the 'dog in the night time'

well done for avoiding Holden Caulfield - probably wise...

How about the influence or role of animals in obsession. You've got the boy and the dog, what about the man and the whale in Herman Melville's, Moby Dick? Or am I missing the point, totally? Apologies, if I am!
"The Wasp Factory"; unreliable narrator, father-son relationship, mystery. Quite unpleasant too!
Fluke.......James Herbert
