Anyone else read it? Based on a true story, the result of the author’s interviews with the main character. Poorly constructed and such a wasted opportunity for a writer. A huge disappointment.

I've heard plenty of criticism of this book.

I recently read Five Chimneys by Olga Lengyel - a good but harrowing read. Two days ago we visited Dachau and it was fascinating but so very sombre.
Question Author
HereIam, I’ve read both those books and quite enjoyed them so horses for courses I suppose. Ar least for what they were they were well written. This book is an offence to literature.

CG, I’m going to initiate a thread in Society & Culture about holocaust memorials.
Have you visited any yourself, Naomi?
Question Author
Yes. Many.
Don't they chill you to the bone?!! :-(
Question Author
Without fail.
I've got a book at home to start reading: Treblinka: A Survivor's Story by Chil Rajchman. I don't know if anyone else here had read this book and what they thought?

Rachman was one of only approximately 70 people who escape Treblinka (roughly 70,000 perished) and he resettled in Montevideo and died in 2004, aged 89.
Question Author
I haven’t read it but I would be interested in your assessment of it.
Will do. I've got a couple of Documetary Series on DVD based on the Nazis, the death camps and the Final Solution to watch. I'll report back on those too.
Question Author
Thanks. I’ve just tried to download a sample of that to my kindle but for some reason I can’t. I’ll try again later.
Is there any particular holocaust book you'd recommend, Naomi?

Thanks.
Just noticed my typo at 12:34.

700,000 perished at Treblinka.
I nearly read it a few months ago and decided against.

The sequel, 'Cilka's Journey', is published in October.

As has been said, this book has proved very popular and topped the fiction charts for many many weeks.

The problem with sales charts is that all it says is people bought the book...It doesn't say what they thought about it, who finished it and so on.
Indeed woofgang.

People often read a book because a friend enjoyed it.

I tend to overlook reviews until I've read a book.
Question Author
CG, I can’t recommend any non-fiction books but as I’ve said I would recommend The Boy in Striped Pyjamas and another like that insofar as it was initially written for young people but subsequently adopted by adults, The Book Thief, which tells a tale of life for civilians in Nazi Germany. A strange little book narrated by the character ‘Death’.
Thanks, I've read The Book Thief.

Another book I have at home but haven't got round to reading is Elli: Coming Of Age In The Holocaust. It's got great reviews.
I Downloaded this to my Kindle, not that impressed with it , found it a bit boring ,I've visited Auschwitz and Birkenau camps and thought I'd read up on this
Question Author
You won’t bother with the follow up
then Bobbi?
Probably not Naomi, I've read the boy in the striped pyjamas but made the mistake of then buying the video which I thought wasn't as good as the book, the book was more informative
