1 Robert Frost
3. Dead Poets' Society?
2 Cast a cold eye On life, on death. Horseman, pass by! That is the epitaph that Poet William Butler Yeats wrote for himself.
Pretty sure that Saul Bellow's fourth novel, published in 1956, didn't take its title from the 1989 film Dead Poets' Society.

I'd have said Horace.
Question Author
thank you Mamyalynne.
thank you Tilly2 although im not sure about number 3 being dead poets society
jimF Horace?
Carpe diem was a big part of "Dead Poet's society". No film would be the "source".
Question Author
JimF Horace's carpe diem? is a line from dead poets society (I think)
Yes it is, but look at the OP - you know, the one you wrote....
Saul Bellow wrote his novel in the Fifties, hence an Eighties film could not have been the source..

I'd go - Horace too.
I think I have the wrong end of the stick here.

Possibly...

//Dashiell Hammett suggested the idea for the play to Hellman after he read a book titled Bad Companions (1930),a true-crime anthology by William Roughead. It related an incident that took place in 1810 at a school in Edinburgh, Scotland. //

The title was inspired by a line from Rudyard Kipling's poem "Gentleman Rankers"

Gentlemen-rankers out on a spree,
Damned from here to Eternity,
God ha' mercy on such as we,
Baa! Yah! Bah!
5 Rudyard Kipling (Gentlemen Rankers)
it doesn't look as if anyone knows for sure who wrote 6

i'm not understanding the questions , are the names in brackets the op guess or what ?
They are the authors and the question seeks to find where the source of these titles came from. eg

I realise that Mally, it's an unusual and interesting set of questions isn't it.

Something I hadn't given much thought to before.
