by having the official Easter holiday as a moveable feast. Surely it would be more sensible to have a "Spring Break" on a fixed date each year?

Let the believers do what they want when they want.

How many of our Bank Holidays are on fixed dates?
Is this classified as "natter and nonsense" ?
I suppose it is to some...
If they were fixed dates we would have bank holidays any day of the week instead of Monday. We have two spring breaks on roughly fixed dates every year - early May and late May. This year it will be 3rd May and 31st May.
Actually the C of E wanted to fix the date of Easter....I have no idea why it never happened https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reform_of_the_date_of_Easter
Corby - precisely none.
To avoid confusion, by "fixed", I mean they fall on the same date each year.

well Xmas & New year are & the others to a particular weekend in a month. None moves about for weeks like Easter.
Christmas Day and Boxing Day are fixed dates.
//How many of our Bank Holidays are on fixed dates?\\

Just three out of eight.
Fixed day of the month, rather than a fixed date, presumably. It would clearly be easier in principle to designate the Spring holiday as, say, the second week of April, rather than varying between March 22rd and April 25th on any given year.
The Bank Holidays for Christmas and New Year do not fall on the same dates each year.
Christianity is not a minority group in this country. It makes sense to have bank holidays on Mondays, to create a long weekend. Anything else?
Xmas and New Year fall on 25/12 and 1/1 so why are Easter dates changeable?

"Christianity is not a minority group in this country. "

Many people put their religion as some sort of Christianity on censuses etc. but the number of PRACTISING Christians is probably only a small fraction of that.

"Xmas and New Year fall on 25/12 and 1/1 so why are Easter dates changeable?"

To pander to the religionists!
It was passed in 1928 that Easter Day should be the 2nd Sunday in April but was never enacted as it would have put the UK out of sync with the rest of Europe.
JD, none of the UK Bank Holidays falls on the same date each year.
tigger, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the vernal equinox full moon, the first Sunday after the full moon of March.
I suspect that JD's latest answer is the real reason there hasn't been a change. No other country following the Christian calendar is doing this, so for us to would be to move out of sync with the rest of the world.

Easter can move by 35 DAYS. It's just ridiculous!
