We have Grand mother, Grand daughter Grand son so why is Grand dad spelt Grandad?
I've always spelt it with 2 d's, Granddad, but my daughter says it's only spelt with 1 d, but surely that would make it Gran dad, if you know what I mean. Doesn't make sense to me.

I thought it might be just me, as I do admit I spell some words differently to other people.
I've always spelt this word like this Aunty, whereas my nieces and nephews always spell it Auntie.
I am a Nanna, not a Nana, again my choice.
Perhaps it's me being awkward.
Think I might have got this from my Mum who's name was Beatrice, but she wanted it shortened to Beaty, not Beattie which is how everybody else seemed to spell it.

The OED only recognises the single 'd' spelling. Searching for the word with a double-letter spelling only diverts back to this:
