Pubs Banning Under 21’S?

Being debated on T.V right now about whether pub landlords have the right to ban under 21’s as they generally are responsible for the large majority of fights, drunken behaviour, disruptions etc.....(their opinions not mine).
Your thoughts??

I would have thought they fell foul of the discrimination laws. So called ageism in this case.

Well it's 21 in the USA I think but bad behaviour is a sign of the times I think rather than an age thing. There was lots of underage drinking when I was a teenager (I started going in pubs at 15) but I don't remember any trouble.

No they cant. For instance they cant refuse to serve Black people.

This is no different, they are picking a section of the community and applying a blanket ban.

They can ban individuals or groups that do not fall foul of the discrimination laws.

No it is not. There is more3 filming of it now and it gets into the media.

I remember many a mass brawl with the skinheads in the late 70's in Town. And in Poole there were always fights on "Squaddie" night. The West Howe crew used to go up to Poole deliberately to start them.

I personally can’t see how they can tbh....... the under 21’s will only end up buying drink anywhere and drinking it outside, at home etc. And yes I agree that social media is a big part of it - you just see it far far more now

Some licensees have no choice about whether or not to admit adults who're under 21, as the local licensing authority includes such a clause in their licence. (There are pubs in Ipswich, for example, where such a provision applies).

A landlordd can of course refuse to serve a black person, but not because he or she is black.
Many pubs and clubs have minimum ages, most usually set at 21, sometimes 25. It makes it much easier for the pub not to fall foul of the licencing laws - too many under 18s look much older than they are and landlords know id can be forged.
No different from some supermarkets refusing to sell alcohol to under 21s - many have that policy.

erm I thought they had an almost absolute right to admit or refuse on the grounds they are publicans and the pubs are usually full of drunks anyway

presumably it is about a blanket ban on the lines of no dogs gypsies or chinese ...

Why do people on AB read what they want to see rather than what is there? It's very clear I wrote "PEOPLE" - plural.

not a good plan in my opinion, it means that many would have to have ID, something that will cause a lot of problems.

Isn't the policy that if you LOOK under 21 they will ask you to prove you are over 18 by producing ID?

Plymouth was better managed and the marines etc only picked fights with other armed forces ( civilian targets werent worf it) and the Naval provost was always there

No they don't. Supermarkets operate a 'Challenge 21' or, more commonly these days, a 'Challenge 25' policy but that's just a rule for staff that says they must seek age verification from anyone who appears to be under 21 (or 25). However, once challenged to provide valid ID, they then only need to prove that they're 18 in order to be sold alcohol.

And how are these under 21s going to learn how to behave in pubs with being escorted by mummy and daddy?

In all my experience trouble has been started by over 21s.. More like the 30+ age group.
