The windows were located in the attic. Some of these windows were a door to starlight. Secrets were hidden behind iron bars on the floor below. The air that filtered through the iron bars brought life to this place. The kitchen was on the lower floor. It was divided into three parts, its most precious treasure was in the center. To which work do these clues belong?

Do you think it's Madame Bovary Sevo? Over the weekend I pasted your quote into google translate for French and then searched for them on google. It came up with lots of books that had some of those words - Hugo, Loti etc - but none that matched it anywhere near the majority.

Gaston Leroux?

Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary

Well done Auntypoll. Even my terrible Francais tells me you have got it.👍

Yes Auntie poll, you've got it bang to rights.  Take my BA away & give it  to her, please, Sevo.   Well done - and thanks for putting me out of the searching my brains all this time.  :)

Sevo, what Auntypoll wrote is a direct translation of the OP (I speak/read reasonable French).  It has to be that - or else someone has quoted Madam Bovary as the start of another novel.
