would some one please be kind enough to explian the meaning of this joke i have a few theories but dont know for sure any help wld be appreiciated

It's like a car bumper sticker, it is irony, or even a play on words.

well, 'save the whales' means preserve them, don't kill them or let them die, and thats understood the world over.

but saving something could also be what collectors of any item do, like saving baseball cards or beermats.

its just a serious statement made 'funny' by changing its expected meaning to the opposite, i,e by saving the whales for a collection you would be killing them
