I'm sorry I don't have a sensible answer to this one but I think jp_mcdaniel should also consider that perhaps the Puritans were too focused on survival to think about converting the natives. I think the story of the Roanoake settlement is an excellent example of this.

I would also like to apologise to the Tartanwizard if he returns here, it's not that your answer wasn't good or relevant but if you examine the era and the years from the Reformation until everything settled down a bit there were a hell of a lot of people who didn't give a monkeys about whether or not you actually wanted to convert to a particular religion or if you had a concept of hell or not.
