mexican drug cartels are now classed as terrorist organisation in the USA under an order by president trump

people fleeing those same organisations however have been deprived of any way to legally make an asylum claim with the closure of the CB One app and are thus left with two choices: attempt to enter illegally or face the cartel. there are no other borders in the north of mexico.

what is the point of this decision?

south america is a big place they could choose another country besides america, like argentina brazil peru oh no freebies in any of them, so you have your answer.

They're only people, dispensible. Money is Trump's driver, not compassion.

mexico has two borders in the south, guatemala and belize. from the north you can only get there by going through cartel territory (and mexico is huge by the way) and both of those southern countries have an extremely strong cartel presence.

don't think you've thought that through fender. basically your attitude is "let them die"

Question Author

canary

it strikes me as absolutely incoherent that the US has designated the cartels as terror organisations (a move which i think makes sense) and then also abandons the victims to their fate. i don't think a lot of people grasp the depths of evil that these organisations carry out regularly.

Mexico is a big country too.  The person to sort this out is the President of Mexico, not the President of America.

Question Author

the cartels are stronger and richer than the mexican government. for example...

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/20/deadly-battle-mexican-drug-lord-cartels-el-chapo-son

they can't even keep members under arrest. the west half of the country is effectively a narcostate.

TDS.

"what is the point of this decision?"  Presumably to stem the flow of millions of Mexicans entering the United States.

If they are genuinely fleeing across the border as refugees/asylum seekers can that really be illegal ? I'd have thought that international agreements would protect the genuine lot.

Question Author

it is illegal yes old geezer. there was one way to apply for asylum at the us-mexico border and it has now been closed. these people have been left to their fate.

"what is the point of this decision?" - to fix the illegal invasion, The situation in the sheet hole counties these people come from is irrelevant to that. How I wish we had a leader to solve our own invasion problem.

Question Author

much of the southern USA used to be mexico which is why there is such a large hispanic population and culture in that area of the country. they've been there since before those areas were part of the USA. it's not hard to see why mexicans would want to seek safety there. parts of the USA are 50% or more hispanic and always have been.

Question Author

let them die then toratoratora?

09:58 so you think mexicans on the wrong side of the border should be allowed into the US?

09:59 nope let them live... in their own country. The cartel is effectively running the country but they are no different to many dictatorships around the world. Many peoples manage to live in them. Sometimes they get organised and have a revolution and save their own country.

Question Author

i think they should be able to make asylum applications and judged on a case by case basis. i don't think they should be let in unconditionally no.

here's a question for you tora - if your options were to illegally migrate or you and your family (children included) would be raped and tortured to death then what would you do? because that's what the cartels do and that's the choice these people are facing.

The US must look at the issue from their side.

Should be in a camp while their applications are swiftly checked and acted upon.

Should be much the same in the UK.

Question Author

the people in the link are ones who are already targeted by the cartel toratoratora... if you read it then one of them was forced to join as a footsoldier or else his family would be killed, then he managed to escape. for people in that situation it's either flee the country or suffer a horrible death. there's no third option.

Where does it end?  America is not responsible for the world and his wife.
