Speech marks

Why don't speech marks appear on a post. If I highlight something by placing it between speech marks they don't come out when the post is submitted ... why not?

Example: "hello" (if these come out I'm going to look daft!)

Hmmm. They do come out when the question is viewed in the big pane at the top of the site, but not if your looking at the question in the list with all the others.... very odd!?

various characters don't appear on the lists... someone said her friend was 36/37 years old and it came out as 3637. But they appear ok when you look at the question itself.
