"Self Pity" by D. H. Lawrence.

I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.

Some thoughts on the poem here.

Thanks Kempie, that was driving me mad.

DH and not TE Lawrence? What an opportunity missed. I'm surprised, Riddley Scott should know better. If ever a sadomasochist would quote TE, it would be the character Viggo played.
