The number 4

Why is the number four written as 4 on keboards & phones and not in the other style of writing it? Which is the correct way?

either way is correct, but it seems that writing 4 instead of the orhter way is less confusing to some. also Terry Jones did a series for the BBC last year called the origins of numbers which was excellent. I think that 4 had it's origins in india or Greece. I've tried looking on the web but ran out of time
