I think every house got delivered one but anyone with any amount of sense could see how ludicrous it all was.
Ah - werent the 80's brilliant?
"Protect and Survive" was the title of a series of booklets and a Public information film series produced by the British government during the late 1970s and early 1980s dealing with emergency planning for a nuclear war.
It had gems like "[For the Inner Refuge] use tables if they are large enough to provide you all with shelter. Surround them and cover them with heavy furniture filled with sand, earth, books or clothing".
The level of ridicule with which the series was greeted came as no suprise. I particluarly remember an episode of the Young Ones, but many other comedy acts couldn't resist, either.
