why do the literatery bodies still underate this narrative device. In the last twenty years it has produced some wonderful and diverse literature including; The Sandman, Preacher, Transmetropolitan and even more famously The Road to Perdition.

Alice in Wonderland illustrations by Tenniel. Read That story again as an adult Wow, the pics ares so necessary.
Many children's classics are very profound. Try Wind inthe Willows. Specially the sometimes expurgated chapter 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn'. Good pictures there too. Maybe Catcher in the Rye should have had piccies. hmm.

I agree with TW - sheer snobbery.
One of my favourite pieces is Art Spiegelman's two part masterpiece - Maus and Maus II. This is a moving true story of his father's time in Auschwitz, and the author's relationship with his father in later life. This is one of the few graphic novels to achieve praise ( rightly ) from the normally snobbish "intelligensia". No doubt AB fans could rhyme off umpteen other examples of classic graphic novels.
